The Women Behind Makeful and Their Favourite Holiday Classics

Diehard. This isn’t something you’d consider a typical holiday binge— but for me, it’s all about the tradition. This movie doesn’t throw Christmas cheer in your face but still, somehow, within the drama and action of the film, causes you to get into the holiday spirit—odd right?

Home Alone. Macaulay Culkin, John Candy, Catherine O’Hara, Joe Pesci and a killer soundtrack….What’s not to love? Maybe it’s nostalgia but every year without fail at some point over the holidays I stumbled across Home Alone on TV and I can’t...stop...watching.

When Harry Met Sally. Not exactly what people think of as a holiday movie, but some key moments happen during the holidays, including an unforgettable New Year's Eve scene. It's the kind of movie that makes you want to visit New York City in December, carry home an unwieldy Christmas tree, and fall in love with your best friend. All the holiday feels, right?

The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. A CLASSIC. This movie has everything. Sarcasm, love, holiday spirit, humour, emotions and most importantly, a lesson. Also, who can blame the Grinch for wanting to hide away in a cave? That holiday stress is real folks.

Christmas Vacation. The holidays aren’t complete without celebrating the Griswold Family Christmas… including cousin Eddie, of course. My family and I have watched this movie every year on Christmas Eve for as long as I can remember. Quoting along with the film is mandatory. ‘Tis the season to be merry!

Home Alone. This movie is so good we had to include it twice. It’s inevitable to go through the holiday season without catching a glimpse of this classic. You’ve either delved into them from start to finish, or have been subject to watching them in bits and pieces. Whether you like it or not, this movie (or series for that matter) is a timeless classic. The memorable one-liners, the moral lessons, the super creative bandit traps. Merry Christmas, you filthy animals!

Elf. I think we can all relate to feeling accomplished after getting a full 40 mins of sleep during this stressful time. This movie reminds us that holiday cheer isn’t just for children. That a middle-aged man who loves syrup and candy can help us remember all the excitement around this time of the year.

I absolutely adore Home for the Holidays, starring Anne Bancroft, Holly Hunter and Robert Downey Jr., directed by the amazing Jody Foster. This movie gets an A+ in holiday family dysfunction and dynamics. And an extra + for the hilarious turkey mishap. Every year I laugh, I cry, and then I watch it again! Bonus points: Spaceballs! This is a ridiculous Star Wars spoof, that I’ve been watching since I was a kid. I’m laughing even thinking about Rick Moranis as Darth Helmet. And it’s a must watch over our holidays.

Mean Girls. Have you actually gone a whole year without catching a glimpse of this iconic movie? Whether it’s gifs used in casual conversations or the occasional “that’ so fetch” catch phrase that we all want to happen, this movie is the epitome of culture. And who can forget that jingle bell rock dance routine—it’s iconic!

A Christmas Story- so many classic lines and scenes. Leg lamp! You’ll shoot your eye out! I can't put my arms down!
