Get Cozy with This DIY Pom-Pom Rug

With summer on its way out the door, I think we all could use a little extra colour in our lives.

Before I get started with this DIY, I have to warn you, it’s not for the faint hearted. In order to make this pom-pom rug, I had to first make over 100 pom-poms.

Making pom-poms can be tiresome, so I’m actually going to show you how to make pom-poms in two different ways. One is a great way to make pom-poms of varying sizes (although I promise you’ll probably make big ones the most), and the other is a super easy hack to make multiple pom-poms all at once.

Once you’ve got the pom-poms, the rug is actually really simple. If you can get your hands on 100 pre-made pom-poms, you could even do that. My local craft store had a few on sale and definitely used them in this project, #SorryNotSorry.

Materials
  • Several balls of yarn in your favourite colours
  • Pom-pom maker
  • Chair
  • A non-grip rug pad
  • Sharp scissors

Instructions:

Pom-Pom Maker Method:

  1. I mostly used a set of four different sized pom-pom makers to create my pom-poms. They’re actually super easy to use and made things really simple. I could give you a rundown of how it’s done, but honestly other people have done a much better job, so learn how to use a pom-pom maker with them.

Using A Chair Hack:

  1. I used this way to make a pom-pom a few times because it makes a lot at once. You need to flip over a chair and use the legs.
  • Wrap your yarn around the legs of a chair about 100 times.
  • Tie smaller pieces of yarn around different sections of the wrapped string to create about 5 different sections.
  • Cut down the middle of each section, creating several pom-poms at once! You’ll slide the last two pom-poms off the legs of the chair, and then cut that loop to form your final pom-poms.

Making The Pom-Pom Rug:

  1. Once you’ve created (or bought) your pom-poms, use the yarn that ties all the little pieces of yarn in a ball to tie around the sections of your rug pad.
  2. After you’ve tied on all 100+ pom-poms, your rug is finished! That’s actually the easiest part of it all.

If you make it through all your pom-poms, please let me know how it went! You can tag me on Instagram @handmadejungle, or let us know here at Makeful. We love seeing your creations, so make sure you let us know how you did.
